Picking the best handyman business software is harder than it looks, because a handyman business is really two businesses. Half your calls are small, standard jobs (hang a TV, fix a faucet, assemble furniture) that a customer should book straight off your website. The other half are bigger projects (a bathroom refresh, a deck repair, an inspection punch list) that need a look and a written quote first.
Marketplaces like Thumbtack and Angi bring you leads but charge for each one and keep the customer. Field service tools like Jobber and Housecall Pro run the job and the money well but bill per user. Here's what a handyman needs, how we handle it at ProTyz, and an honest comparison of all four.
What a handyman business needs from software
Instant booking for hourly and standard tasks
If a customer wants a ceiling fan installed, they shouldn't have to email you and wait. They should pick "Ceiling fan install," see a price, pick a real open slot, and be done. The same goes for "hourly, 2-hour minimum."
Quote-first for the bigger jobs
A "fix my fence" request can be one loose post or a full rebuild. You need a way for the customer to describe the job (and ideally attach photos), for you to respond with a line-item quote, and for them to accept without a back-and-forth of texts.
A client list you own
Repeat customers are the whole game in handyman work. The first job is a faucet; the fifth is a kitchen backsplash. The software should keep every customer, every address, every note, and every job in one record you control, not on a marketplace profile you rent.
Not paying per person as you grow
The moment you add a second tech, per-user software doubles. That's a tax on growth.
How ProTyz handles it
ProTyz is a free CRM plus booking website for local service businesses, and Handyman Services is one of our ten launched service lines.
Instant-book services. Set up your standard tasks as services with a base price, priced inputs (quantity, size tier), and extras. A customer picks the service, sees a live itemized quote, passes a ZIP service-area check, sees only your genuinely free slots, and books. Confirmation goes out by email (SMS on Pro). An hourly service works the same way with a minimum price.
Quote-first services. Mark bigger jobs as quote-first. The customer submits a quote request from your site. It lands in the Quote Requests tab in your dashboard. You send back a line-item quote, they accept via a link, and it becomes a booking on your calendar. No spreadsheet, no "did you get my text?"
Pricing engine. Base price plus priced inputs and extras, a frequency-discount ladder (useful for a monthly "honey-do list" visit), coupons, fees, minimum price, tax, tip, and deposit. Deposits are recorded on the booking; card capture is deferred, so you collect the deposit however you do now.
Invoicing, free on both plans. Turn a completed booking or an accepted quote into an invoice without retyping the line items, or start one from scratch. Send it by email, and the customer gets a link to a read-only invoice page. Reminders chase the late ones, you record payments as they arrive, an AR summary shows what's outstanding, and there's a CSV export plus your own numbering, terms and footer. They still can't pay by card online, so you collect the way you do now and mark it paid. On Pro, invoices push into QuickBooks Online with a sync log and a retry.
One client record, forever. Clients are found or created by email and kept as one record with addresses, notes, and job history. If you add a second service line later, say Window, Gutter & Pressure Washing, it's the same client list under the same login.
Top Opportunities. A rule engine flags clients due for re-engagement: an annual job done about a year ago, a client who used to book quarterly and stopped. You get an editable draft and press send (email on Free, SMS on Pro). It never messages anyone on its own.
Reminders, reviews, messaging. 24-hour email reminders are free; 1-hour SMS reminders with CONFIRM/CANCEL replies are on Pro. A signed review-request link goes out after each completed job, and a two-way inbox keeps customer conversations in one place.
Team. Unlimited team members with qualifications and schedules. The mobile PWA at /mobile gives each tech a job list, GPS check-in, photos, start/complete, and earnings. Routes optimizes the day's order; Payroll turns time entries into payroll runs.
Website. Home, services, about, reviews, book, and quote pages on a yourbusiness.protyz.com subdomain with a handyman template, your logo and colors. Pro adds one custom domain.
Cost. Free is $0 forever with unlimited bookings, clients, team members, service lines, and invoicing. Pro is $10 a month flat for SMS, a custom domain, and QuickBooks sync. No per-user fees, no contracts, no card to start.
Why marketplaces charge per lead and keep the client
Thumbtack and Angi work differently from the other three tools. You don't pay a subscription; you pay for leads. On Thumbtack that's a charge each time a customer contacts you (or you respond), whether or not you win the job. Angi is similar. As of mid-2026 those prices vary by category and location, so check each platform directly.
The bigger cost is structural. The customer's relationship is with the marketplace: they came to Thumbtack, they'll go back to Thumbtack, and next time they may be matched with someone else. You paid for a lead; you didn't build a client list. That's fine for filling a slow week. It's a poor foundation for a business whose profit is in the fifth job, not the first.
The sensible pattern is to use marketplaces as a paid lead source when you need one, and move every customer you win onto your own site. ProTyz never charges commission on bookings through your own site; a future marketplace will charge commission only on bookings it originates.

Where Jobber and Housecall Pro win
Jobber and Housecall Pro are still ahead of ProTyz on the money side of a handyman business. ProTyz now invoices and syncs to QuickBooks, but they go deeper: fuller accounts receivable, net terms and progress billing, and, the big one, taking a card from the customer, including on the doorstep before you leave. Add mature native apps and a phone number to call when something breaks. If you get paid on the spot, or you want one ledger with every payment already in it, those features are worth paying for.
The cost is the per-user model. A three-tech shop is roughly $177 a month on Jobber Connect or $189 on Housecall Pro Essentials, and it climbs with every hire.
Who should pick what
- Solo handyman, mostly small jobs, want customers booking off your site: ProTyz Free. Instant-book for standard tasks, quote-first for the rest, and a client list you own. Add Pro when SMS reminders start saving you no-shows.
- Solo or small, but you get paid by card at the door: Jobber Core or Housecall Pro Basic. Taking the card on site is the part ProTyz can't do, and it justifies the subscription on its own.
- Two to five techs, growing: ProTyz if per-user fees are the pain and card payments are handled elsewhere. Jobber or Housecall Pro if you need one app for scheduling, dispatch, and taking the money, and can absorb the seat cost.
- Brand new, no customers yet: Thumbtack or Angi to buy your first leads, and ProTyz from day one so every customer you win lands on a site and client list you control.
- Already on Jobber or Housecall Pro: run ProTyz for the booking website and re-engagement, and keep billing and card payments where they are. There's no contract either way.
FAQ
Can customers book small jobs instantly and request quotes for big ones on the same site? Yes. In ProTyz each service is either instant-book (price, real availability, done) or quote-first (request → line-item quote → accept link → booking). Both live on the same booking page.
Does ProTyz charge per lead or per booking? No. Bookings through your own site carry no commission on any plan. A future marketplace will charge commission only on bookings it originates.
Does ProTyz do invoicing, card payments, or QuickBooks? Invoicing yes, free on both plans, including from a completed booking or an accepted quote. QuickBooks Online sync yes, on Pro. Card payments no: deposits are recorded on the booking, card capture isn't built, and a customer can't pay an invoice online yet. Jobber and Housecall Pro are stronger on payments and on deeper accounts receivable.
Is Thumbtack worth it for a handyman? As a lead source when you need work, yes. As your system of record, no: you pay per lead and the marketplace keeps the customer relationship. Move customers you win onto your own site.
What does ProTyz cost with three techs? $0 on Free, or $10 a month on Pro for SMS and a custom domain. Team members are unlimited on both.
